On May 30, 2023, the RAAQH shared the progress report for the accreditation of 44 hospitals at Mille Collines in Kigali. The Head of the Department of Clinical and Public Health Services in the Rwanda Ministry of Health led the event, with the presence of the main project partner, the USAID-Rwanda and USAID/RHISA. The WHO-Rwanda and Enabel were also represented. The Director Generals and Quality Improvement Officers represented the surveyed hospitals.
Before the award ceremony, three quality improvement projects that stood out were presented: reduction of waiting time, reduction of post-cesarean infections, and reduction of fetal hypoxia.
In the last 3 years, three new hospitals entered the accreditation program and had therefore a baseline survey. In this FY 2022/2023, they were targeted to achieve level I. One hospital did very well and achieved Level 1 recognition, while the other two were close to it. Three specialized hospitals ( Orthopedic centers) and one district hospital joined the program and 2 of them performed well. Among the 44 hospitals that passed through the progress accreditation assessment, 16 achieved Level II recognition, and only two did not reach any level. Although seven hospitals performed above Level II, they did not meet the required threshold of an overall 70% in each risk area.
These results indicate progress towards achieving the accreditation level (Level III) in the near future. The significant improvement from zero hospitals at Level II in 2018/2019 to five hospitals in 2020/2021, eleven hospitals in 2021/2022, and sixteen hospitals in 2022/2023 is noteworthy (see graph below).
